Some information on the irl coup:

To make a long story short, Congress, the supreme court, and military, all conspired to overthrow Zelaya, using his decision to hold a non-binding poll on whether or not Hondurans might want a referendum for a constitutional assembly as a justification. One thing you might come across in the literature is that Zelaya was holding the poll so he could add reelection to the constitution. This is actual FAKE NEWS concocted by the opposition. The poll was to be a "fourth ballot box" at the the Presidential elections, and thus would have occurred simultaneously to the election of Zelaya's successor. Furthermore, it was just a poll, it didn't even mean a referendum let alone and assembly would be held.

It was definitely illegal
There was significant resistance and polls show at least pluralities of Hondurans backed Zelaya, but the military was pretty brutal and as a result the pro-coupists (who may have been paid) turned out in larger numbers.
One big problem I'm seeing is that the military was just able to sweep into the Presidential palace without resistance.
The US Southern command's civilian arm may have assisted

I think if I can strengthen my lead among the people, that would go a long way. Another thing, I want to try to make sure the military has to fight to take the Presidential palace. An actual fight would show the people that the military isn't in control of the situation, and would give more time for popular resistance to develop..

Zelaya made some significant strides in reducing poverty and expanding welfare. I think I should try to do two things -- first, begin land reform (IRL Zelaya was getting started when he was overthrown), second expand current anti-poverty programs

Well I guess the easiest or obvious things is to not hold or delay the referendum.

The referendum was such an inoffensivd thing I expect the coupists were just looking for an excuse

Sure, but if the referendum doesn't actually accomplish much anyways, then why give them the excuse. At worst, it buys you more time.

(OCC: An important question is how is the coup simulated? Is it an event that will automatically happen or does the US player have to initiate it)

(That is not openly available information. Certainly there is currently opposition to Zelaya building within the Honduran establishment. What would be enough to cause them to rise up and attempt to depose Zelaya is not immediately predictable. By many accounts it seems that they might be willing to see out the short remainder his term as President.)

Yeah, I getcha. I'm not sure what I'll do about the referendum. What I was trying to say though was that I think a lot of things I could do might cause a coup, so I'm just going to be safe and operate under the assumption it is going to happen.

Actually, the referendum was already reannounced, so it's too late.

RIP. :smug:

Alright, well for all intents and purposes then we should probably anticipate and react accordingly.

I would defs appreciate economic aid

Right now, I'm thinking about starting an anti-corruption campaign. Also, there are long running and often violent land disputes between Campesinos and the Dinant corporation. Long and short of it is, the west, in trying to reduce it's carbon footprint cheaply, has caused a dirty war between this corporation and Honduran peasants, though the actual land disputes are long lasting. I intend to start hearing the complaints of the peasants, and, if I can garner the support, nationalize the land and distribute it to the peasants. That rural support could help me in a coup, which will definitely happen if I go up to bat against Dinante.

Also I probably want to expand existing social welfare programs.

I'll look into if there are any options here.
