In this thread are major world events that could potentially become issues. Issue threads are primarily for players to intervene and so if no players choose to intervene then World Media news items will resolve pretty much as they did historically. There may be overlap between turn report threads that will appear in Main Info and here.

Here will also be posted mid-turn actions that do not require an issue thread.

December News.

Coup in Guinea.

A military coup has seized power in Guinea on the 23rd of December, a group of officers calling themselves the National Council for Democracy and Development has taken control of the country shortly after the death of the previous president, President Conte. President Conte died the previous night of what was announced by the President of the National Assembly to be natural causes. The CNDD announced that it would rule for two years before holding another presidential election.

In their initial statement a member of the coup, Captain Camara, announced that the coup was neccesary to resolve Guineas deep seated social problems of poverty and corruption and declared the existing organs of state “unable to resolve the problems confronting the country”. He announced that while the CNDDs military members would hold the post of president a civillian would hold the post of Prime Minister and that civilians would be well represented in the interim council. He also announced that the Constitution as well as all political and union activity were to be suspended.

The coup passed largely without violence, the previous Prime Minister, Minister Souare handed himself over to the CNDD peacefully and has stated his administrations willingness to work with the new government.

Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Mumbai was hit by a massive terrorist attack in late November which saw three days of raging violence hit downtown Mumbai. Seeming only to want to cause chaos the attackers hit hospitals, train stations, cinemas and Jewish centers throughout the city. The casualty count now stands at 166 with over 600 injured, nine of the attackers were killed in the fighting, with a tenth Ajmal Kassab having survived the attack and who is now in custody.

The Pakistan government has promised assistance to the Indian police in catching any supporters of the attack, the group assumed responsible, Lashkar, is known to operate in Pakistan.
