November 1990

An uprising of hundreds of fundamentalist students has begun near the Syrian-Iraqi border in the south-east part of the country. Clearly inspired by Salafist doctrine, with Arab Mujahideen forces linked to Saudi Arabia providing military experience, it is believed to be a formidable force against the ruling Ba'athists as many citizens feel increasingly estranged from the government.

Regardless of Syria's past actions let this be a warning to those states which allowed the Saudis to build salafist Wahabi mosques in your countries.

Yugoslavia uses its credit to send arms to the Syrian government, allowing it to better withstand the rising assuming it has no foreign support.

December 1990

France enacts sanctions on Syria, citing its arming of the PKK. This, as expected, results in a considerable decline in Syria's already declining living standards and emboldens the rebels to intensify their struggle, albeit any military gains made by them are offset by new Soviet arms shipments to the Syrian army.

France is known to have spent a credit sending weapons to the rebels via Saudi territory.

On the contry my good sir, we have admired from afar the Syrian policy of supplying weapons to those who need it in their fight against democracy and the international community. We simply take the view that if such behaviour is accepted as the international norm then these brave rebels fighting for democracy, or at the very least more democracy than they have now, deserve the support they asked for. We knew that Syria would not mind, their strong stand on principle having inspired us to action in this matter.

We salute President Assad and his bold leadership.

With all due respect my friend in France, your petulance has actual consequences. Syria is not right to arm the PKK, it's true, but that does not justify you. Your response is to destabilize their region and support Salafist sunni jihadis sent to Syria by the Saudi grand mufti who advocated for genocide against the Shia. For what? Because he did it first? That's not the actions befitting a major world leader, I thought better of you. If there is genocide the blood is at your feet, and at France's.

We do not support the Salafists but the Syrian people who rise up against a dictatorship. You fought against that and i had expected a certain degree of understanding for those that fight against their oppressors from the ANC of all people. The citizenry of Syria cries out for change. One cannot allways choose ones allies in the fight for liberation but we have received satisfactory assurances that the rebels support a form of government with representation for the people, which is one step further on the road to self determination than the Syrian people are now.

You do not support the salafists yet you arm them, your actions speak for themselves.

Let us not try to twist things here, the ANC identifies with all oppressed peoples. We do not speak in favor of the Syrian government and we have condemned them as well in the past, that does not mean we cannot also condemn the arming or genocidal militiants by Syria's old colonial power (if reports are to be believed many among these militiants are foreigners crossed the border to commit this 'holy' genocide.) You say you got the assurance that those on the path to genocide will form a decent government, look at the Khmer Rogue in Cambodia who made essentially the same promises and already are carrying out mass slaughters as soon as they get in power. I am not assured by any means, nor should anyone, about the promises of genociders.

I had a high opinion of France as a nation on the forefront of liberty and rationality, but I find that image being tarnished more and more.

Ok, ok. So, I can't approve anything either, but I can analyze that the most harmonious road is Syria and France both ceasing rebel support.

January 1991

The EEC enacts sanctions on Syria, citing widespread human rights abuses. Living standards among urban citizens plummet as peaceful protests break out in Damascus and other areas demanding the government hold new elections with opposition parties. Many (but not all) of the protesters praise the fundamentalist rebels.

The protests widen as the rebels draw nearer to the capital.

Syrian security forces and police suppress protests in the capital, leading to reports about a hundred being killed and hundreds more wounded.

The government also states that the rebels are persecuting the Druze as well as other non-Sunni believers in the areas controlled by them.

De Klerk kicks his heels up onto a bar while swigging a beer, thoroughly enjoying the tribulations of the government which introduced the sanctions on South Africa.
